Did you know that today is official “Love Your Pet Day”? I think there are obscure holidays like this every day of the year, but for pet lovers, this is a really important one! Just like you take the time to buy, prepare and eat healthy food yourself, so should you do for your pet. Homemade dog food is especially easy, economical and very healthy for your dog. But if you don’t have the time or the resources to do this, you can give your dog (or cat) a healthy boost by adding chia seeds to pet food! Yes, that’s right, the same chia you are eating is also great for your pet. The large quantities of protein, calcium and healthy omega’s are just as good for Fido and Fluffy as they are for you!

The seeds have no discernable taste or flavor so they can be added to your pets food with out interfering with the flavors they already love so much. It can help pets that need to gain weight by adding nutrient packed calories with out the extra fillers. Chia can help pets with dry skin and itching problems, it can boost the shine in their coat, it can even help with their eye-sight. Chia in gel form is a great pet food supplement if you are noticing your pet has an upset stomach or is experiencing digestive issues. The chia gel will coat the lining of the stomach and intestines, helping to ease discomfort.

As with any supplementation, it is best to consult with your pet’s veterinarian before starting anything new. Once you’ve received the go ahead, begin adding 1/2 tsp for every 5 pounds your pet weighs. If you sprinkle plain seeds on the food, consider adding a little wet food and make sure they have plenty of water to drink. The best way to add  chia seeds to pet food is to incorporate the chia gel into their regular dry food.
